DDW Pic 2432. Flower and Garden Festival

Flower and Garden Festival
The Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival started today. This year, the festival lasts a full three months, ending on May 28th. I took this shot yesterday, on the bridge leading from the center of Future World to the area near Test Track.

DDW Pic 2431. Norway

This waterfall can be found near the entrance to Frozen Ever After in the Norway pavilion. In the old Maelstrom ride, the Viking boats could be seen in an opening above the water. I took this shot while giving an Epcot tour today.

DDW Pic 2430. Everest

I have posted many photos of Expedition Everest from different vantage points, but not too many “on ride” shots. This is the view from the large lift hill near the beginning of the ride. I took this shot while riding with my son yesterday.

DDW Pic 2429. World Showcase

World Showcase
It was a beautiful day at Epcot yesterday. I took a leisurely stroll around World Showcase Lagoon, while my tour guests were having lunch at the Rose & Crown Dining Room. I took this photo from between Japan and America, and you can see the United Kingdom, Canada, and Imagination in the shot.

DDW Pic 2428. Sumatran Tiger Cubs

Sumatran Tiger Cubs
Last year, two Sumatran tiger cubs were born at Animal Kingdom. They spent quite a bit of time “backstage” bonding with their mother. They first were visable to the public just a few months ago. Yesterday was the first time I saw them wide awake and running around their habitat in Maharajah Jungle Trek.

DDW Pic 2427. Magic Kingdom Opening Show - Onstage

Magic Kingdom Opening Show - Onstage
The Magic Kingdom opening show is now being done on the stage in front of the castle. Each morning, Mickey and friends greet guests, just prior to the opening of the attractions. I had a great spot to grab this “onstage” photo this morning.

DDW Pic 2426. Ring-Tailed Lemur

Ring-Tailed Lemur
The ring-tailed lemur is a fun little animal found on Discovery Island, not far from the Tree of Life. In the wild, lemurs are found on the island of Madagascar. I took this shot during the “animal discovery” portion of a tour I gave yesterday.

DDW Pic 2425. Kali River Rapids

Kali River Rapids
This Asian temple sits atop the inside part of the Kali River Rapids queue. I was standing in this spot, waiting for my tour guests to float by on the river. The blueness of the sky gave this photo a nice background.

DDW Pic 2424. Thunder Mountain

Thunder Mountain
Although I have posted dozens of Thunder Mountain pics over the years, this view thru the fog is unique. I knew there would be some fun Magic Kingdom photo ops this morning, when I couldn’t see Cinderella Castle while walking up Main Street. This was some of the most dense fog I can remember at Walt Disney World.

DDW Pic 2423. Polynesian Village Resort

The Polynesian Village Resort is one of the original Walt Disney World hotels, opening in 1971. The decor and the landscaping transport guests to an island in the the South Pacific. I took this photo just outside of the main entrance, yesterday afternoon.

DDW Pic 2422. Enchanted Tales with Belle

Enchanted Tales with Belle
Enchanted Tales with Belle has one of the better “holding areas” for a Magic Kingdom attraction. Guests wait inside Maurice’s cottage, where they can enjoy some references to Belle’s childhood. There is even a height chart, where you can see how tall she was on each of her birthdays. I took this shot while giving a tour a few days ago.

DDW Pic 2421. Enchanted Tiki Room

Enchanted Tiki Room
Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room is an opening day attraction with some historic significance. The original Disneyland version was home to the very first “audio-animatronic” figure. I used the iPhone “long exposure” feature on this shot that I took in the pre-show area this morning.

DDW Pic 2420. Figment

Journey into Imagination at Epcot represents the only time that Disney invented a character specifically for an attraction. Figment the dragon has been a fixture at this park for the better part of the last 35 years. I took this shot in the “sound lab” area, while riding with my son today.

DDW Pic 2419. Fantasyland

The “new” Fantasyland area of Magic Kingdom features both The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. There are two attractions, a restaurant and a meet and greet dedicated to these movies. Yesterday, I found a spot where I was able to get Prince Eric’s Castle and Beast’s Castle in the same photo.

DDW Pic 2418. Maria & Enzo’s

Maria & Enzo’s
Maria & Enzo’s is a brand new Italian restaurant that just opened at Disney Springs. It is themed like a 1930’s airline terminal, and is very impressive. I had the chance to take a brief look inside tonight, and I took this shot of the main dining room. If you look closely, you will see the names of “destinations” painted on the mural near the ceiling. These places are geographically correct, in that when you are looking at each name, you are facing in the geographical direction of the location.

DDW Pic 2417. Tusker House

Tusker House
This wall of masks can be found just outside of the Tusker House Restaurant entrance at Animal Kingdom. Of course it fits in with the African theming of the area, but there is more to this than meets the eye. The little sign labeled “JORODI” Masks & Beads is a tribute to a very significant Walt Disney World cast member. Joe Rohde is the lead designer for Animal Kingdom.

DDW Pic 2416. Rivers of America Crossing

Rivers of America Crossing
One of my favorite spots in Magic Kingdom is the transition between Liberty Square and Frontierland. It represents the crossing of the Mississippi River, and the passage of time from the 1700s to the 1800s. As soon as guests cross the “bridge,” all of the theming changes. This includes the scenery, cast member costumes, and even the music.

DDW Pic 2415. Rapunzel’s Tower

Rapunzel’s Tower
Rapunzel’s Tower can be found in the Fantasyland section of the Magic Kingdom. Although it looks like it could be an attraction, it is actually just a decoration in the Tangled restroom area. I took this shot today from Liberty Square, and I was a few hundred yards away. I like how the split in the tree framed the tower.

DDW Pic 2414. Liberty Tree

Liberty Tree
The Liberty Tree sits in the middle of Liberty Square, across from the recently popular Hall of Presidents. This 100+ year-old oak was originally found by Walt Disney himself, about 8 miles south of its current location. After Walt’s passing, and before the park opened, the Disney company uprooted the tree and re-planted it in this spot.

DDW Pic 2413. BB-8

I don’t often post pics of merchandise. However, when I walked into Tatooine Traders at Hollywood Studios this morning, this BB-8 rolled right up to me. He is not quite full size, but this droid is one of the best “remote control” Star Wars figures I’ve seen.

DDW Pic 2412. Grand Floridian

Grand Floridian
The Grand Floridian has two pools and this great water “play area” for young kids. Themed to the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland, this giant hat dumps large amounts of water every few minutes. I took this shot yesterday, while passing thru Disney’s flagship resort.
